Color(s) of the Year 2022
Sherwin Williams and Benjamin Moore each release their “Color of the Year” that has sparked interest in consumer trends and is believed to be on track to continue as top color choices for the upcoming seasons. It comes as no surprise, that greens are in. If you have looked through Pinterest or Instagram lately, you have probably seen many inspirational home images using greens for wall paint or cabinetry.
If we think about color theory, it makes sense that we are shifting towards using more green in the home given the current state of the world. Green invokes feelings of safety, health, growth, natural environment, and success. With everything that has happened these past 2 years, it’s not surprising that the market is shifting towards wanting colors in their environments that would make them feel these emotions. We collectively have gone through trauma with the drastic changes that have gone on and the constant feeling of not knowing what will come next. By creating a home space that makes you feel safe just by the choice of colors, we are healing our mental wellbeing, and maybe without even really consciously knowing it.
We are also seeing a shift away from cool neutrals and towards warm creams, beiges, and browns. These neutrals are perfect to combine with greens, especially if you are going for a natural feel. The complementary color to green is red. And you might be thinking that would look too much like Christmas colors, but choosing the right red and green to go together is key. Working within the same tones is definitely important in finding the right mix of colors. You also have the option to shift towards a more orange-red or towards a more yellow-red. Talking to an interior designer is key to selecting the correct colors for your home. One tip I always tell my clients is to never look at images of colors on the internet. You may find yourself reading blog posts or Instagram pages where people are sharing their wall or cabinetry colors. I assure you, these colors look different when they are photographed and also will change drastically in different lighting. If I specify the same exact color in two different clients’ homes, they are guaranteed to look different based on the natural light, artificial light, and what colors are reflected in the space off of the floors and furniture.
