Bedroom Color Theory
Color theory is more important than you may know. It is not just about using color schemes found online or using whichever color is on trend throughout your home. The effect that color has on your mood and emotions can greatly impact your daily life. We spend about 1/3 of our lives sleeping, so it only makes sense to have a well designed bedroom to spend your time in. Using cool colors as opposed to warm colors in a bedroom is a good choice based off of the feelings they provoke. Cool colors include blue, green, and violet.
Blue is the most common favorite color in America. The color blue is associated with the ocean and the sky. Blue increases feelings of peace, serenity, and security. It has been shown to lower pulse rates and body temperature. There are some people who have quite the opposite reaction, hence the phrase “feeling blue”. Some people react to the color blue with feeling of sadness or loneliness. Depending on your past experiences, you may feel strongly one way or the other.
Green represents new beginnings, optimism, health, and growth. It is in between yellow and blue on the color wheel, so it encompasses some of the energy of the color yellow while still having the calming attributes from blue. Green is associated with mother earth and a feeling closeness to nature. Green is often thought of as a lucky color in western cultures.
Violet has historically been associated with wealth, wisdom, bravery, meditation and spirituality. Purple does not often occur naturally, so it is viewed as being rare and exotic. It is in between red and blue on the color wheel, which gives it energy and serenity simultaneously. Pantone named Very Peri, which is a periwinkle color, their color of the year for 2022. It is an indicator that we may be seeing more violet used in interiors in the near future.
